Operations Management & Logistics

I recently had the privilege to listen to an opening address by Prof Helena van Zyl, Director of the UFS Business School. She shared with the audience a number of interesting observations from Thomas Friedman’s latest book – Thank you for being late. Professor van Zyl’s talk really struck a chord with me as I could relate with what is happening in this new world we work in.
We no longer have lifetime careers like our parents used to have. The way we learn has changed considerably. The way we work and collaborate today will probably change tomorrow. Think about how technology has opened opportunities that could not exist before. Companies like Uber and AirBNB were born out of smart phone technologies.
If we want to survive, we need to keep pace with the exponential rate of change that is happening around us. Or, to quote Thomas Friedman: “…the only way to retain lifelong working capacity is to engage in lifelong learning.”
I started off studying Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations, but through my career I had to learn significantly different skills from what I initially thought I would do for the rest of my life. Where I stand today, I know that I have to learn so many other things in the near future just so that I can stay relevant.
Learning new things is not easy. We all know how difficult it is to juggle a career, studies and a family. There are often just not enough hours in a day. The UFS short learning programmes provides you with the knowledge and skills to maximise your potential in your work, but also k

eep you abreast with a dynamic and changing world. Our short learning programmes are specifically designed for people who know how important it is to study, but who also have to deal with the demands of work and family.
In our programmes, we focus on sound theory, tools and models, but also add significant practical application and experience to the mix. You will be able to apply what you learn from day one as our programmes are designed to maximise your understanding through practical application.
I have the pleasure of teaching Operations Management & Logistics. The content is applicable to all kinds of organisations and you will be able to introduce practical concepts at work. The programme is structured in such a way that you will learn how to improve the effectiveness of processes in your own job, but ultimately contribute towards driving your own organisation’s performance.
